one of those places university ave quietly keeps to itself. barriques has been part of madison's coffee conversation long enough that it doesn't need to announce itself, and if you're cutting through the near west side on a weekday morning, that's probably when you feel it most. the neighborhood itself pulls a mix: students, faculty, people who live close enough to walk. none of that is manufactured. it just happens to sit where it sits, on a stretch of road that's been feeding the city's academic and residential overlap for decades. the coffee here is taken seriously without turning into a performance about it. come back on a slow afternoon when university ave goes quiet and order something off the espresso menu.
