the flat white is the obvious move here, and at bluestone lane on carmine street it's one of those drinks that actually rewards the order. you won't feel like you stumbled into a tourist trap on this particular block, which sits close enough to the west village proper to get some of that neighborhood's unhurried tempo. bluestone lane has built a real following in new york, which is no small thing in a city that will tell you exactly when a coffee shop isn't up to scratch. the cortado works too, if you're in that mood. carmine street in the late morning, coffee in hand, is a pretty decent argument for slowing down before the day gets away from you.
