you're on isohamacho, a stretch of ibaraki coastline where the pacific sits close enough that the air has weight to it. hitachi-naka bleeds into oarai out here, and the neighborhood doesn't announce itself much. cafe caramel mama is the kind of place that local people return to, not because there's nowhere else, but because it holds up. ibaraki doesn't get the specialty coffee coverage that tokyo does, which means spots like this one tend to be genuinely discovered by people who live nearby rather than chased down by visitors. you probably won't stumble in by accident. but if you find yourself on this corner of higashiibaraki district, a coffee here in the late morning, with the coast somewhere behind you, is a reasonable reason to stop.
