Caffe Florian has been open continuously since 1720, making it the oldest operating cafe in the world. it sits in Piazza San Marco, Venice, in a building that has served coffee through the fall of the republic, napoleon's occupation, and two world wars. the interior rooms are painted and gilded, and the cafe has never closed for more than brief interruptions in over three centuries of trade.
