carlton cafe does independent coffee properly, without pretending it needs to be anything grander than it is. newton abbot isn't a city that gets much attention from the specialty press, but tq12 has a quietly loyal coffee scene, and carlton sits at the centre of it. what you get here is consistency, the kind that comes from a place that's been paying attention long enough to stop second-guessing itself. no overcorrection toward trend, no undercutting on quality. locals have clearly figured this out before you did, which is fine. worth making time for on a weekday morning, when the town is still finding its pace and a flat white is the most sensible thing you can order.
