chalait does matcha right, and that alone is enough to pay attention. plenty of spots in new york treat it as a trend item, something to photograph and move on from. this place on amsterdam avenue takes it more seriously than that. you're not going to get a watered-down, too-sweet version here, the kind that tastes like green-colored milk and very little else. the upper west side has no shortage of places to sit with a drink, but chalait has built a following for a reason that's actually about the drink itself. if you're in the neighborhood with time to spare, the matcha latte is the thing to order before you do anything else on amsterdam.
