and there's something about walking down hope street that makes you slow down a little. dreads caribbean cuisine/hygge bakery & cafe sits at 1106 s hope, where downtown los angeles still feels like it's figuring itself out. the pastries here pull from two different traditions without making a big announcement about it. you can grab a danish that tastes like someone's grandmother made it, or something with a caribbean twist that reminds you this city contains multitudes. the coffee holds its own against the food, which isn't always a given when kitchens get ambitious. mornings bring the usual rush of people heading to work, but afternoons slow to a different rhythm. the kind of place where you can sit with your laptop or just watch hope street do its thing. that almond croissant, though.
