the matcha here gets mentioned first for a reason. higashiyama ward moves at a slower pace than most of kyoto's tourist corridors, and motoyoshicho sits close enough to the gion shinbashi canal area that you'll likely pass it between shrines without expecting much. that's the wrong expectation. ex cafe has built a quiet, genuine reputation among locals, which in this part of the city means something, because locals have options and opinions. if you're coming from hanamikoji, it's a short walk and worth the detour before the afternoon crowds settle in. the coffee menu holds up to that local regard. end the morning with whatever the seasonal drink is, or just go straight for the espresso and trust what the neighborhood already knows.
