lexington's specialty coffee scene has been quietly expanding beyond the downtown core for a few years now, with pockets of independent spots pulling regulars away from the expected routes. west loudon avenue is one of those streets worth tracking down. habibis sweets & pastries, at 101 w loudon ave, has built a following that keeps coming back, and the pastries are a real part of why. this isn't a place where the baked goods are an afterthought sitting dusty beside the register. if you're heading over, go with enough time to actually sit with something sweet. the pastry side of the menu carries as much weight as what's in your cup, and that combination is what gives habibis its particular pull on that stretch of lexington.
