the pastries here are worth building your morning around. hardman street sits close enough to the spinningfields crowd that you'd expect a conveyor belt of grab-and-go, but hey little cupcake! doesn't operate that way. the baked goods are the point, and if you treat them as an afterthought you're doing it wrong. pair whatever catches your eye in the case with your coffee and actually sit with it. manchester does independent cafes in every register, loud and minimal and everything between, but a place that makes pastries central rather than decorative earns a different kind of loyalty. this is a good spot when you need somewhere that isn't performing busyness at you. start with the pastries. order a second one before you leave.
