jules jo takes its coffee seriously without making a performance of it. that quieter kind of focus is harder to pull off than it sounds, especially in a city where cafés can lean heavily on atmosphere to do the heavy lifting. what you get on rue hermel is a shop that seems to have figured out its own rhythm, somewhere in the 18th arrondissement, far enough from the more tourist-worn parts of montmartre to feel genuinely local. the 18th has plenty of places to sit with a coffee, but not all of them treat the cup itself as the point. jules jo apparently does. if you're in the neighbourhood in the morning, the flat white is the obvious starting place.
