kyoto takes its coffee seriously. the city that turned tea ceremony into an art form has, over the past decade or so, applied something of the same attention to specialty coffee, and you'll find that seriousness concentrated in unexpected corners of higashiyama ward. koma gallery cafe sits at kinencho, deep in one of the city's most historically layered districts, and the regulars who keep coming back aren't doing so by accident. this isn't casual loyalty. higashiyama draws people slowly, on foot, between temples and cobbled lanes, and a place that holds steady here has to offer something worth pausing for. if you're moving through the ward in the morning, before the tourist crowds thicken, this is where the locals seem to land first.
