you're on jl. m. saidi raya, somewhere south of the city's louder preoccupations, in a part of jakarta selatan that doesn't particularly announce itself. petukangan isn't a neighborhood people usually name-drop, which is probably why masalalu has the kind of regulars it does: people who found it and kept coming back. the place carries a quiet seriousness about coffee that you notice without being told to notice it. jakarta has no shortage of cafes, but this one has built something more durable than buzz. if you're heading south through pesanggrahan, block out time around mid-morning, when the street outside jl. m. saidi raya no.45 is a little slower and whatever's in your cup actually gets your full attention.
