seminyak pulls in a lot of coffee shops that coast on the tourist foot traffic, so finding one that actually takes the coffee seriously feels like a minor victory. mermaid coffee shop sits off jl. pantai kuta, close enough to the beach that you'll probably walk past it on the way to somewhere else, which would be a mistake. the area's busy, loud in the way beach towns always are, and yet this place holds its own as an independent spot in a part of bali where independent doesn't always mean quality. the reviews back that up without needing any further argument. if you're in kuta and the morning is already getting away from you, this is where to start it, with a coffee in hand before the heat sets in.
