good coffee in midtown is harder to find than it should be. east 32nd street sits in that stretch of the city where the lunch crowd moves fast and the chains multiply, so when a place like mike's coffee and deli holds its ground, you notice. it's both a coffee shop and a deli, which sounds like a compromise but really isn't, because the people who keep coming back aren't doing it out of convenience. they're doing it because the place delivers. the regulars here are the kind who've made up their minds, and in new york that's not nothing. if you're coming from the koreatown end of 32nd, make it a morning stop before the block gets loud.
