you're on well street, e9, which sits in a part of hackney that moves at its own pace. number 1 cafe at 36-38 doesn't announce itself loudly, and it doesn't need to. the people who know it, know it, and they keep coming back in a way that means something. specialty coffee in east london has plenty of competition, but regulars here are genuinely loyal, not just habitual, which is a different thing entirely. you get the sense that what's in the cup is taken seriously, handled properly from start to finish. no shortcuts, no hedging on quality. if you're heading over from victoria park or cutting through from homerton, the morning slot is worth planning around. a flat white here on a tuesday before the street fills up is a good reason to leave the house early.
