los angeles has so many coffee shops pulling for your attention that it gets genuinely hard to know where to look. penny coffee roasters, out on east arrow highway in glendora, is where some of that noise falls away. glendora sits at the eastern edge of the san gabriel valley, far enough from silverlake and echo park that it doesn't carry that scene's self-consciousness, and penny fits that register. the regulars here are loyal in the way that only comes from a place consistently doing right by them, not occasionally, not when it suits. you don't have to already know the neighborhood to feel that. it's the kind of spot worth making a stop on the 210 corridor, especially in the morning when east arrow highway is still quiet.
