new orleans takes its coffee seriously in a way that's almost civic. the city has its own rituals, its own preferences, its own deeply held opinions about chicory and cold brew and what constitutes a proper morning. pj's coffee on s claiborne avenue sits inside all of that, serving a neighborhood that isn't performing anything for tourists. you're not going to find a lot of theater here, just a place where the coffee is taken seriously and the surrounding mid-city corridor gives the whole thing a grounded, unhurried quality. the reviews back this up in a way that's hard to argue with. if you're in that part of town and the morning is still doing what new orleans mornings do, the iced coffee is the move.
