los angeles has more specialty coffee than most cities know what to do with, and the san fernando valley gets less credit than it deserves for its share of it. r cafe on reseda boulevard in northridge is quietly holding its own in that conversation. the valley isn't a detour from good coffee, and if you've been treating it like one, this is a reasonable place to reconsider that. locally well regarded and operating out of a unit b address that doesn't announce itself loudly, it rewards the people who actually look. northridge isn't a neighborhood that draws coffee tourists, which means the crowd here tends to be genuinely local. start with the espresso.
