you're on six mile road, out in northville township, where the strip doesn't exactly scream destination coffee. renu sits along that stretch anyway, and the crowd finding it says something about how far people will drive when a place is actually doing the work. detroit's specialty scene has plenty of ambition, but the suburbs can be hit or miss, and a shop that holds its own out here isn't coasting. the standing renu has built is the kind that comes from consistency, not novelty. if you're making the trip, plan around the morning hours when the espresso bar is running at full pace, and don't skip whatever single-origin pour-over option is on the board that week.
