ron herman cafe does one thing consistently well: it holds its ground as a specialty coffee destination inside a department store without feeling like a concession to convenience. that matters more than it sounds. kyoto's nakagyo ward moves at its own pace, and a sixth-floor cafe in kyoto bal could easily coast on foot traffic alone. this one doesn't. the standing it's built locally points to something deliberate rather than incidental, a place that takes its coffee seriously even when the setting could get away with not doing so. if you're already navigating the bal building on yamazakicho, the sixth floor is worth the extra button on the elevator, particularly in the late afternoon when the city outside starts to settle.
