shellys cafe does one thing consistently well: it makes you feel like the coffee was made for you specifically, not for whoever walks in next. that's rarer than it sounds. thornbury isn't a city that gets a lot of attention on the specialty coffee circuit, but st mary street has a quiet pull to it, and shellys is a big part of why. the regulars here are loyal in the way people only get when a place actually delivers, week after week, without coasting. no performance, no hedging. if you're passing through bristol's north fringe and you've got fifteen minutes, don't skip it for something more convenient on the motorway. end the morning with whatever they're pouring filter that day.
