still on the south side of the river, and worth it. cumberland road sits between the water and the old industrial fringe of bristol, which means emmeline isn't a cafe you stumble into on a lunch break, you go because you mean to. that kind of deliberate trip sorts out the places that hold up from the ones that don't, and emmeline holds up. its regulars are loyal in the way bristol coffee people tend to be, which is to say quietly devoted and slightly evangelical if you get them talking. you could do worse than to time a visit around a slow weekday morning, when the neighbourhood feels unhurried and the coffee is the whole point rather than an afterthought. the flat white is the move.
