weymouth has a decent enough coffee scene for a seaside town, but most of it clusters around the harbour and the tourist drag. portland is a different thing entirely, geologically and socially cut off from the mainland in ways that still feel real. sugar loaf cafe sits on reforne in easton, which is about as local as portland gets, far from the day-trippers. the regulars here clearly feel something close to ownership over the place, and that kind of loyalty doesn't accumulate quietly without reason. if you're making the trip out to the island anyway, or you live out there and already know, this is where the coffee conversation on portland actually happens. start with whatever's pulling espresso that day.
