the buttery at the crypt cafe sits beneath a chichester church, in vaulted stone rooms that predate most things you'll do today. the crypt was built to hold the dead, not a pot of tea, and that tension is most of the appeal. the ceiling is low, the walls are thick, and the architecture does considerably more work than the menu needs to.
