you're on woodrolfe road, past the marsh and the boat yards, at a point where tollesbury stops feeling like it's performing for anyone. the industrial estate address sounds unlikely for a coffee stop, but that's where tollesbury cafe sits, and the regulars here clearly don't need convincing. this corner of the essex coast doesn't get a lot of passing trade, which means the people who come back do so deliberately, on purpose, because it's worth the detour. if you're driving out to the blackwater estuary or just moving through maldon, it's a reasonable case for rerouting your morning. the kind of place that holds its ground quietly in a village that runs at its own pace. start with whatever they're pulling on the espresso bar that day.
