a slow afternoon in aro valley has its own particular gravity, and 90 aro street is where a lot of people end up giving in to it. the street itself is one of wellington's quieter ones, residential enough to feel removed from the cbd without actually being far, which matters when you're deciding whether to stay for one coffee or two. aro cafe has been roasting its own beans long enough that the locals stopped treating it as a discovery and started treating it as a given. you come for the coffee, you probably stay longer than planned. that's not a criticism. wellington takes its specialty roasters seriously, and this one holds its place in that conversation without apparent effort. end the afternoon with a long black before the walk back up the hill.
