coyoacán moves at its own pace. the neighborhood has always had a certain pull, bookshops and market stalls and the kind of plazas where saturday mornings stretch long, and the coffee culture here has grown to match that unhurried energy. café el refín, on cuauhtémoc in del carmen, sits inside all of that without trying to explain itself. it's independently roasting, which means you're not getting a centralized warehouse blend shipped in from somewhere anonymous. locally, it's held in genuine regard, the kind that comes from people returning rather than people posting. del carmen is a good stretch of coyoacán to find yourself in anyway, and if you're there on a weekday morning before the neighborhood fully wakes up, an espresso here is a reasonable place to start.
