the rue des ayres end of bordeaux rewards the kind of slow walk that actually gets you somewhere. café piha sits at number 69, doing three things at once: roasting, selling beans, and pulling shots for people who notice the difference between good coffee and everything else. that's a tight brief to pull off well, and yet here they are, strongly regarded by the kind of regulars who don't give their loyalty cheaply. if you're in this city and you take your coffee seriously, this is one of those addresses you write down rather than screenshot. the roaster-and-café model means the beans behind your cup aren't arriving from some anonymous warehouse, they're being worked on a few metres away. go in the morning, order the espresso, stay longer than you planned.
