oldham's coffee scene doesn't ask for your attention the way manchester city centre does, and that's part of what makes the roasters working out here worth tracking down. heart & graft operates out of holyoak street in m40, which puts it just inside the manchester boundary but well away from the usual specialty coffee corridors. what they're doing here is roasting, not just retailing, which means the coffee you're drinking has a provenance that starts on this street rather than being shipped in from somewhere more obvious. the regulars who know this place tend to know it well, and that kind of loyalty doesn't attach itself to somewhere that's coasting. if you're planning a visit, go early and go for whatever's freshest off the roaster.
