good independent roasters in london don't always plant themselves where you'd expect. long & short is out in walthamstow, unit 5 of the crate building on st james street in e17, which means you're already off the tourist map before you've ordered anything. that's not a complaint. the area has its own pace, and a roaster with this kind of following tends to suit it. regulars here aren't casual about their coffee, and the shop doesn't treat them like they should be. what you get is a place that takes the sourcing and the roasting seriously enough that the cup reflects it, without making a ceremony of the fact. st james street on a weekday morning is a good place to find that out for yourself.
