
and then you remember why philly's coffee scene keeps surprising people. nook bakery & coffee bar on south 20th street does what so many places try to do but can't quite pull off: they roast their own beans and bake their own pastries without making either feel like an afterthought. you walk in and the cases are actually full of things worth eating, not sad muffins sitting under heat lamps since tuesday. the regulars here aren't just polite about recommending this place. they're genuinely protective of it. there's something about places that nail both sides of the equation that creates this kind of loyalty. the coffee holds its own against the serious roasters in town, but you're not choosing between good espresso and actual breakfast. both work. both matter. the almond croissant at 9 am on a weekday.
