the filter coffee here is worth planning your day around. heathcote valley sits at the foot of the port hills, far enough from central christchurch that you don't end up here by accident, and upshot has the kind of following that builds slowly, through word of mouth and repeat visits rather than foot traffic. they roast on-site at 131 bridle path road, which means what you're drinking was probably roasted nearby, recently. if you're used to cafes where the roasting happens somewhere else entirely and arrives in a bag, that proximity matters more than it sounds. the regulars here are strongly attached, and that loyalty tends to be earned through consistency rather than novelty. come early, and order the filter.
