the verdict

the YM-5 bridges the gap between sample roasting and small production, handling 1 to 5 kg batches. it shares the same manual gas control philosophy as the rest of the YM line, so you're still roasting by feel and experience rather than software. the larger drum gives you more room to develop your roasts and experiment with charge temperatures and airflow adjustments, but you're still working within the limits of a purely mechanical system. this machine makes sense for roasters doing farmers markets, small cafes, or online sales where you're roasting a few times a week. it's not built for high-volume daily production. used YM-5s are common and tend to hold up if maintained, but don't expect the thermal consistency or build quality of a probat or a giesen.
