the flat white here has built a real following on stanhope road, and if you're heading to 50nine for the first time, that's probably where to start. st albans isn't short on cafes, but the regulars at this spot on al1 5bj treat it less like a coffee stop and more like a standing appointment. the kind of place that gets quietly, seriously popular through word of mouth rather than anything louder. you don't end up this well-regarded by accident, but you do end up this well-regarded by being consistently good at the thing you set out to do. afternoon filter is worth considering if espresso drinks aren't your thing. either way, stanhope road earns the detour.
