Single-Estate Farm

Volcán Azul

unclaimed

San José, Costa Rica

Family-run farm + mill in Costa Rica's West Valley. Direct exports of micro-lots and experimentally processed coffees.

about Volcán Azul

volcán azul is a family-owned farm and wet mill in costa rica's west valley region, led by fifth-generation producer alejo castro kahle. the castro-kahle family has grown coffee on the property since the 1840s. the farm operates across roughly 300 hectares, of which approximately 200 hectares are maintained as protected forest. the family also conserves over 1,500 hectares on the osa peninsula. production avoids insecticides and relies on naturally enriched volcanic soils. the farm mills its own coffee on site and exports micro-lots directly, including experimentally processed and naturally processed lots. varieties grown include caturra. lots are sold under both the volcán azul and hacienda colima labels. the farm has placed in costa rica's cup of excellence competition under the hacienda colima label. buyers purchasing from volcán azul typically require a full container, making it best suited to roasters with the volume to commit at that scale. the farm has established direct relationships with roasters in europe, including the barn berlin, which lists volcán azul as a partner farm. lead times and additional volume tiers are not publicly confirmed.
