good coffee in osaka's nishi ward takes a little looking. asahi coffee sits in minamihorie, a part of the city that runs quieter than the main shopping corridors, and that particular quality seems to suit a roaster operating at this level. they roast their own beans, which means what you're drinking hasn't traveled through three middlemen before it reaches the cup. the locals here know it, and word hasn't had to travel far. if you're spending time around the horie area, this is the kind of stop that makes an afternoon make sense, not because it's charming in some abstract way, but because the coffee itself is the point. go sometime in the middle of the day, when minamihorie slows down a little, and just have the espresso.
