if you're making a detour off the motorway corridor on the way somewhere else, montgomerie road in māngere isn't where most people would expect to find a roaster worth the stop. but espresso workshop has built a following out there that doesn't rely on foot traffic or passing trend. the regulars are consistent, and that kind of loyalty in a city moving as fast as auckland says more than any passing review could. you don't need to be a coffee obsessive to appreciate what's going on here, though it helps. the operation is rooted in the work of roasting, not the performance of it. if you're heading south from the city, or cutting across to the airport precinct, build in time for a cortado before you get back on the road.
