you're on jacros-salite mehret road, which isn't the part of addis ababa that shows up in travel guides, and that's precisely why tarara coffee works. ethiopia is the country that gave coffee to the world, and yet plenty of spots in addis coast on that fact without doing much with it. tarara, locally well regarded, is the kind of independent roaster that takes the source material seriously. you don't have to go far out of your way to get there, but it does feel like a place you find rather than stumble into. the neighborhood keeps it honest, away from the polished corridors where cafes perform for visitors. go in the morning, when the coffee is freshest off the roast.
