where we would send you for coffee in soho, and one just north of oxford street, from our own visits in may 2026.

in this guide

if you want the best coffee in soho, go to flat white on berwick street for the flat white itself, hideaway coffee house on farrier's passage for a calm flat white and a slab of peanut butter cake, and onsu bakery on dean street for the dirty coffee and the kumquat and lemon cheesecake. but if you're happy to cross oxford street, omotesando on newman street in fitzrovia made the best iced cappuccino of our visits. we went to all four ourselves in may 2026, and everything below is what we ordered and saw.

how we picked these

every place here was visited in person by our editor in may 2026. nobody paid to be included. so the list stays short: we only include places we have been to ourselves.

flat white, berwick street

order the flat white. it comes in a 6oz cup with a double ristretto, and the milk is worked in so well that you taste the espresso through every sip: velvety, rich without being heavy, with no harsh bitterness. the beans are dark arts coffee from hackney, pulled on a synesso machine. if you're staying, add the filter of the day, a dark arts single origin brewed on a v60 or as batch brew depending on how busy the bar is. skip the food. nobody comes for the chorizo sandwiches, croissants or brownies.

the room is narrow and dark in a good way: black walls, exposed bulbs, about twenty seats at tightly packed tables, and music loud enough to matter (indie rock, then reggae, on our visit). there's no wifi. on weekdays the office rush lands around 8:30. get there before 8:45 and you'll be served quickly; after 9:15, expect ten minutes minimum in a queue that runs from the counter to the door. so it suits you if you want serious coffee and have no plans to spread out a laptop. we visited in may 2026.

onsu bakery, dean street

onsu is the one for theatre. the dirty coffee is hot espresso poured into a glass chilled to minus 86 degrees, and it turns slushy on contact, close to a granita but with full coffee intensity. it costs £7. order it first, before any food warms your mouth. pair it with the kumquat and lemon cheesecake, the standout of the visit: a malty biscuit base that doesn't go soggy, a creamy filling, and a citrus jelly shell on top with a bitter, bright lift. if you're hungry, the wagyu beef curry bun (around £8) has a thin shell and a coconut curry filling. the mushroom toast (around £6) is solid, but you won't miss it.

inside it's a black and chrome box with polished concrete floors and six staff in black aprons. service is quick and curt, payment is on tablets, and the only seats are a few high stools along the window, so this is not a laptop stop. the queue is the catch. on our visit it was twenty people deep at 9:40am for a 10am opening, and weekends can run to an hour. tuesday to thursday mornings clear in ten to fifteen minutes, and 2pm to 4pm stays quiet most days. and if the wait is an hour, skip it. we visited in may 2026.

hideaway coffee house, farrier's passage

farrier's passage looks like a service alley, about ninety seconds off carnaby street, and it's easy to walk past. but the reward is a small, calm coffee bar with a pastry case right at the door. order the flat white, made with beans from origin coffee roasters in cornwall: velvety, with the milk held just shy of scalding so you can taste what you're drinking. with it, get the peanut butter cake, dense and rich, the pairing we'd happily come back for. if you're on the move, the batch brew was running two beans when we visited, papua new guinea and guatemala, and the guatemala was clean and bright. there are croissants and pain au chocolat too, and oat milk if you want it.

the room has hardwood floors and white walls, counter seating with stools for solo drinkers, background music, and courtyard tables out the back, which is rare in central london. mornings between eight and ten usually mean three or four people ahead of you, rarely more than five minutes. the afternoon window from two to four gives the best mix of pastry choice and free seats. our editor called it a solid seven out of ten: nothing exceptional, nothing wrong. so it suits you best if you live or work nearby. we visited in may 2026.

omotesando, newman street (fitzrovia, just north of oxford street)

this one is in fitzrovia, not soho, but it's a short walk north across oxford street and it made the best iced drinks of our visits. order the iced cappuccino: properly chilled, with a bubbly milk foam that sits on top and holds. the cold brew was just as good, and both got a 10/10 from our editor. the only food is the kashi, a small cube of baked custard with a caramelised top that cracks like crème brûlée over a soft inside. the iced cappuccino and kashi together came to about £6. there are pour-overs too: on our visit a kenyan aa that tasted like blackcurrant jam as it cooled, and a colombian that moved from floral to dark chocolate.

you order at a blonde wood counter with an ipad register, get a numbered ticket, then perch on fold-down wooden stools along floor to ceiling windows. there's no music, no visible sockets and no wifi password posted, so treat it as grab and go. the 8 to 9am weekday rush can reach the door but moves fast, and around 3pm is the quietest time to sit. we visited in may 2026.

if you only have time for one

go to flat white on berwick street and order the flat white. it was the most complete cup across these visits (and the queue moves quickly because most people know their order). but if you have a sweet tooth and the queue on dean street is short, onsu's dirty coffee with the kumquat and lemon cheesecake is the most memorable pairing in soho.
