london's specialty coffee scene has spent the last decade pulling in every direction at once, with roasters popping up across zones two and three faster than most people can keep track. volcano coffee works, on ferndale road in brixton, has stayed put through all of it. that kind of consistency in sw9 means something, because brixton doesn't reward places that aren't pulling their weight. if you're coming from the tube, the walk down ferndale road is short and the shop is exactly where you'd want it to be after a stretch underground. the roasting operation is the core of what they do here, not a side note. worth timing your visit for a weekday morning, when the neighborhood is still finding its pace.
