what is gesha coffee?

gesha is an arabica variety originally traced to the gesha region of ethiopia, now grown across latin america at high altitudes where its notoriously low yields make it expensive but worth it. it produces a cup so distinct from typical arabica that people often assume something has been added. nothing has. that's just the variety.

what does gesha coffee taste like?

jasmine, stone fruit, and a broad floral character are what you'll taste first, then peach settles in mid-cup, and the finish is usually clean and tea-like, closer to black tea than anything roasty. it's light, aromatic, and transparent in a way that washed processing tends to amplify even further.

why does gesha coffee matter?

gesha changed what specialty coffee thought was possible in the cup. when boquete producers started winning competition after competition in the mid-2000s, it forced roasters and buyers to rethink their quality ceiling. it's not just hype. the variety genuinely produces flavors that are hard to find anywhere else in coffee.

what should you look for in gesha coffee?

look for gesha from huila, nariño, or tolima in colombia, where elevation and volcanic soil push the florals higher, or from boquete in panama and apaneca in el salvador for the variety's more established latin american expressions. washed process will show the jasmine and peach most clearly.
