what is typica coffee?
typica is an arabica variety that spread from ethiopia through yemen and then to the rest of the coffee-growing world, making it the genetic baseline for dozens of modern varieties. it tends to be lower-yielding than newer cultivars, which is part of why many farmers have moved away from it, and part of why it still commands attention when you find it.
what does typica coffee taste like?
typica cups lean into milk chocolate and dark chocolate as the backbone, then jasmine and broader floral notes lift things up in the best examples. stone fruit and grapefruit show up regularly too, usually when the processing is clean and the altitude is high enough. it reads as elegant rather than loud.
why does typica coffee matter?
typica matters because it is the reference point. so many varieties, including bourbon, maragogipe, and kona typica, descend from it, so understanding how it tastes gives you a real anchor for comparing everything else in specialty coffee. finding it well-grown and well-roasted is increasingly rare, which makes it worth seeking out.
what should you look for in typica coffee?
eastern highlands papua new guinea, loja in ecuador, and java and sulawesi in indonesia are the regions showing up most in our current index. pichincha in ecuador is worth watching too. look for washed processing if you want the floral and citrus notes to come through cleanly, and check that the roaster is keeping the roast on the lighter side.
